Benchmark Books (Levels A–M) and Benchmark Text Cards (Levels N–P)

Assessment for Instructional Text Level
Benchmarking is the process that determines a student’s instructional text level, or the level a student can read with 90–94% accuracy and comprehend. A reading record is administered in a one-on-one setting, with teachers recording reading behaviors on reproducible scoring sheets. Comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts is assessed using retell/recount procedures after taking the reading record.
